6 Storey Wood Shake Test
SEISMIC TEST VERIFIES MID-RISE WOOD BUILDING SAFETY
On July 14, 2009, at 3:13pm local time, a 2475-year earthquake hit Miki City, 445 km west of Tokyo, in Japan.
This shake-table test was the largest seismic testing of a wood-frame building ever conducted anywhere in the world. It was truly leading edge with more than 400 international experts observing. The building performed extremely well, with no structural damage observed. The test confirmed that seismic risk can be kept at a safe level for wood-frame construction up to six storeys. The test also confirmed the specific technical requirements in the B.C. Building Code for seismic safety are appropriate. This ongoing research provides the most up-to-date information about how wood-frame buildings perform in an earthquake, so British Columbians can be confident their homes will continue to meet the Province’s high standard for safety.
